BY BREE BROOKS
Im Bree, a painter, but also a girl in love with the sea. If it wasn't for surfing I don't think I could find it in me to relax my body and create with my mind for hours on end. Surfing has always been somewhat of an escape for me. As someone who's brain never stops, surfing allows somewhat of a halt. It slows down life for just a moment and I feel like for that time frame i'm finally living in the now.
I never realised my reliance on the ocean until a year ago. I realised the only way I could fall asleep was to think of surfing. The constant thought of surfing allowed my brain to relax and focus on one thing, and one thing only. (kind of like counting sheep I guess haha). It does the same effect to me in the water. So many things happen on land and in our lives. We are always trying to control things, our future and outcomes of things mostly out of our control. The ocean can never be controlled, you will always be at its mercy and thats the thrill of it. Some people think about life when floating and waiting for a set, I think about nothing. I soak in all that nothingness and those are the times I am happiest.
I feel like in a world of chaos, I can find the peace in the ocean. If I could be anywhere in the world it would be in the sea.
My day typically goes.. coffee, surfing, coffee, art, surfing, petting a dog, art, sleep. As you can see I surf as much (sometimes more if its really good) as I paint. Surfing influences my paintings tremendously. If it wasn’t for surfing I would have no idea about different ways waves break, or the colouring of hollow vs soft waves…or even the appropriate marine life. Everyday I paddle out I learn so much about the environment and the creatures that inhabit it. With saying that, Environment and animal conservation is a passion of mine so I always look to incorporate it into my art pieces as much as I can. I support the protection of nature and wildlife, heavily supporting organisations that are fighting for the rights of all animals. I hope to use my art one day to raise more awarness about the equality of every being and protecting more of our oceans.
